Nigerians living abroad are often referred to as people in the diaspora or diasporans. In the diaspora, they learn new things, mix with other cultures, and adopt new ways of doing things. A transnational entrepreneur is a diasporan who lives in one country but does business in locations beyond where they live. Many do business between the country where they live and their home country. In many developing countries like Nigeria, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) operate in a challenging business environment. Many people believe that diasporans can make a difference as part of an entrepreneurial ecosystem, a network of people, institutions, and organisations that support entrepreneurship.

Recently, I was speaking to a group who asked me two specific questions, and I have been mulling over them for days now and decided to write this extended post, building on the talk. The first question was to share the path that led me to where I am and how I first encountered them as a group. With limited time allotted, I decided to speak the language they would understand.
